Hi,

thanks for the article Drake, I'll definitely give it a read.  Also, I just noticed something bizarre, in ONE of our portals the search works fine!  We're not using any different modules, no custom search results page, NOTHING different that I can see.  I tried blowing away the search tables and re-indexing again, but it's still broken.  In 5 out of 6 portals the same search results always come back after the first query.

I've been looking for an adequate (free) replacement module, but haven't found anything yet that really meets our needs.  And I'd find it pretty hard to shell out cash for a basic feature that should work anyways! 

I'll keep digging around and be sure to update here if I make any headway...

Have you tried Inventua Google Search?

I used it for a while, it's quite good, the only downside is that your search results are shown on a Google page.

There is also the Venexus search engine, but at $200 it's a bit pricey.

Yeah, I did try Inventua.  The results showing on a google page is a problem for our users...we cater to a very specific audience of mostly seniors, so absolute simplicity is key.

There is a FREE version. It is limited to 500 items in the index but may suite your needs.
