in locales.xml you can change the display value (name="...") without limitation

I've changed the lines in locales.xml in this manner:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<root>
  <language name="English" key="en-US" fallback="" />
  <language name="Dansk" key="da-DK" fallback="en-US" />
  <language name="Kalaallisut" key="nb-NO" fallback="en-US" />
</root>

But it still shows the original in the language selector. So you're right about the fact, that I can put anything in there, but it doesn't show anywhere...

Am I missing out on a setting somewhere?

Yes, as i told u. u need DSLocalizator module to specify custom string for your language selection. and i think if u want to make multilanguage portal in dnn, you realy need dslocalizator.

Locales.xml, only effect if u just want to change the sequence of the language. such as u want to make english language appear last in your language dropdownlist, then you can move the english language node to the bottom.
