I'd just like to say the previous post's are the reason why I've committed to DNN as my company's CMS software. In most OSS projects an opening post flaming the project  would have started a flamewar or a rude RTFM. Instead you got not one but 3 people offering suggestions, 2 links to tutorials, and several others posting encouragement. I think that really says a lot about the community. Read through the tutorials and if you still have problems ask a question there are many of us here that would be happy to help.

Hello

I think that the original poster has some points, and has every right to be frustrated, I had a lot of trouble at first getting my first installation of DNN to work if I didnt use Visual studio as a debugger. I also dont think there is any need to boost DNN saying how great it is to someone that obviously hasnt got it to work yet, it doesnt help him and only ads to his/her frustration. That being said, I think its well worth the initial troubles to get it working and once you do (refering to people in general aswell as the thread starter), you wont regret it.

If you dont have access to Visual studio there is a free version (which is just as good) from MS that you can use if you want to try the templates instead of the install package. Go over the setup procedure again and make sure that the machine you try on can run SQL server express databases (I tried on one that didnt, and that obviously didnt work ;-). Stop at the first error you get and repost or search this forum for a solution, trust me it works =)

Best regards and good luck
Torbjörn

I will give this a shot.

I have tried the installation at least 20 times over the last several days, and the farthest I got was DNN asking for logons that it wouldn't accept.

System is:

XP Pro with all updates

IIS 5

SQL 2000 Personal edition with all updates

Microsoft VWD 2005 Express

.Net 2.0

The VWD was desperation to see if running the Visual Studio Scripts would help, but no success.  I tried DNN versions 4.4.1 and 4.5.3

This is like having a Porshe or Farrari with no gas or keys.  Great cars but only junk until you can get them started.

I'll post the results in a couple of hours.  Thanks for the input!

Still not seeing any explanation of the problem here.

When you navigate to the url for your installation, is the install screen coming up? Or are you not even getting that far?

Frustration is fine, unloading to a community about a product with which he has no experience with isnt.

Suggesting that a potential user HAS to use VS/VWB to get an install going is not the solution to his problem. It's like telling a Ferrari owner that he needs to purchase or borrow expensive tools before he drives the car.

The title of the thread "Worst software seen to date" was/is innappropriate and out of line, frustrated or not.

We don't even know if this is a local machine install or a hosted site install. I am assuming it's a local dev machine install by his last post.

Letting us know if you're getting to the install page or not widdles down the list of potential problems quite a bit.

Ok now we at least have some thing to work on. If you got to the DNN logon then you actually installed DNN I assume that you used the standard DNN host or admin login ,from memory host login is host with password of dnnhost and admin login is admin with password dnnadmin.

If you have not setup the ISS permissions correctly then it is at least with version 3 it is possible to have a problem with dnn not accepting any login - I remember seeing a forum post on this but have not been able to find it so far but I did have a v3 install with the same problem and it was simply fixed by correcting the permissions ( not a bug in DNN)

If you have not set up ISS permissions correctly you can also get (after the install) the windows login screen asking for user id and password - this may have been the login screen that you saw - if so then give system permissions to the root directlry of the web site. (If this login window appears then enter your XP administrator user id and password and DNN should appear)

When you run the install (browse to the default.aspx in the root directlry) the package goes straight into the install rountine with out any login - you should have got a page of information showing the actual install procedure and from memory as each is done it shows success in green or error in red for each step. DID you see this page??

at the bottom of the page is a click here to enter your portal - did you see this??

if yes then what happened after that.

In the Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider directory you should also see a heap of log files they should al be around 1K in size ( empty) if they are larger then 1K then they have error messages about the sql install - check them out. It is possible that your sql server was not set up correctly and thus some of the tables or procedures did not install correectly.

Form memory DNN does not request a login during the install nor start after it you actually have to click the login button to have dnn display the login screen and you will not see the login button till the install is finished

so if you can come back with some of the answers for the above questions then we should be able to get you up and running

John
