I have pics and videos that I have previously uploaded to my site via FTP that I want to use in the gallery module. However, when I select 'Browse' to add a new file to my album, it only allows me to choose from items on my hard drive. I can't see anyway to direct it to install files from a certain folder of my site.

I noticed that it creates a certain folder structure for each gallery and album. I placed my files in the proper folder and the module still doesn't recognize them. I believe the files have to be actually installed to the module, but I don't know how or if this can be done. I would really hate to have to upload each of my files again through the web based upload. I don't even think I will be able to upload the larger files in this manner, web based uploads always time out on larger files.

Any advice on how to make the module use files that already exist on the site?

The gallery module puts all of its media (pictures, etc) into a directory under the portals/(name/number)/gallery/number/....  You can change this directory if you so wish to point to another directory.

See the FAQ on the gallery module webpage, or on my webpage www.Jegers.com for information on uploading files via FTP and how to sync the gallery with the files on the server.

Thanks a lot for the info James. I understand how to do all of that now. However, something I have noticed is that if I FTP a .wmv  or .swf file to the proper folder for my album. The gallery module does not recognize it when I enter the maintence area to "synchronize" it. I have tried this with multiple different .wmv's and .swf's, the only way to get the module to recognize those file types is to actually upload them through the 'add file' option.

I was hoping there might be some work around for this because most of my .wmv's that I wanted to use in the media gallery are too large for the web based upload and it keeps timing out on me.

You should be able to upload your videos/flash files via FTP, etc.  They should be placed into the root directory of each album (not in the _source directory).

Not to be confused with a Microsoft tech support person--but it is a feature, not a bug.

You will only see image files in the Maintenance screen.  As that screen is for maintaining the thumb/preview images for images.  The videos/flashes will not show up on the maintenance screen.    Note: You will see all files in the "edit" screen where you can adjust file info, names, tags, etc.

Due to how the gallery caches files, you might not immediately see the new video/flash files that you have uploaded.  To fix that you just need to hit the refresh button (looks like 2 green arrows) when you are logged in as admin and that will cause the system to refresh the file cache.
