Hello guys,

My first post here.

I have been looking around at the DNN stuff for a while now, And have decided to give it a blast to see if it can benefit my websites.

But the problem is all my sites so far have used asp and access db's

I am just trying to get a basic install going on my webserver to play around with but I am unable to find any relevant or detailed instructions on this website. And I am still not convinced paying 80 dollars for a book is still going to answer my questions either.

I have a hosting plan that meets the reuirements.

I have plesk 7.6.1 CP

The main problem I have is what details I need to edit in the web.config file as I dont really know what I am doing.

Any ideas?

Or anyone know where I may get some help?

Thanks in advance guys.

Rob

Rob, look in the download area the documents download has installation instructions. Also whilst your hosting package might have the requirements see if the company has experience with DNN.

You might want to think of trying an install on Virtual PC using a 60 day trial of Windows 2003 that way you don't have to take a live site off the air.

Another way is find a host that will look after the back end and DNN code base leaving you to concentrate on your site content.

Cheers for the reply.

The company I am using at the moment are not into dnn unfortunately, the use an asp portal and forum.

Although they are developing a .net portal at the moment, I just wanted to get a site up and running with dnn to compare features etc, when there portal comes to life.

If anyone has experience with dnn install using a plesk cp please let me know as I would like to get it up on my own if possible.

I did find this tutorial

http://www.siteground.com/tutorials/dotnetnuke/dotnetnuke_installation.htm#mssql_create

but the images where the detail on setting up the web.config is are too small and I cant read em, (groovey)

and when i contacterd the creator of the tutorial they informed me they no longer support dnn either and hadn't a clue.

So if anyone has super-vison goggle or super-vision googles and can read sub miniscule text that would also be useful.

Cheers Guys.

Rob,

As Antony mentioned the starter documentation should be downloaded and reviewed. It is on the DotNetNuke site but located as docs under the DotNetNuke 4.4.1 download section. A few things have changed but it's still a good source to become aquainted with.

New with DotNetNuke 4.5.x is the install wizard feature. With this feature you do not have to edit the web.config on your own at all. It's only found in the "Install" installation (you do need to set up your database first). There is a small video tutorial you can watch by clicking on Blogs on the top of the page and then about half-way down you will see Joe Brinkman's "DotNetNuke Featured Videos" - another good place to start.

The Plesk control panel is not much different than most others. Once you have ftp'd your install package to you webhost site then you use it to set up your directory permissions for Network Service/ASPNET depending on the type of windows you are using and to set up your database as well (your webhost should be able to help you with this and it is explained in the documentation "DotNetNuke Installation Guide.pdf")

Good luck with your installation,

Mike
