OK I'm sort of a NOOB at this so dont laugh too hard...

I have a test box (WS2K3 as Member Server) with a DNN 4.5.3 portal as the private intranet sandbox on my network.  So far I havent been able to set up the SMTP properly.  My SMTP Server is on a Domain Controller on another subnet in the same domain.

When I try to configure the SMTP Server Settings in DNN it always replies to the test message with "Failure sending mail. The remote name could not be resolved:".

So here's the stupid question...  Does my test box need to have a client running on it, or am I missing something else?

Yes I did search the forum and all of the documentation before posting this question

Didn't find anything close to an answer...

I have tried a number of SMTP server name strings...
SMTP.mysmtpserver
SMTP.mysmtpserver.myprivatechilddomain
SMTP.mysmtpserver.myprivatechilddomain.mypublicrootdomain
SMTP.mysmtpserver:25
SMTP.mysmtpserver.myprivatechilddomain:25
SMTP.mysmtpserver.myprivatechilddomain.mypublicrootdomain:25

There is obviously a fundamental element missing from the configuration.

Hopefully when this is said and done the thread can serve as helfpul to others!

I recently ran into this issue when I tried to connect to an SMTP server using just the hostname (not an FQDN).  The issue was fixed after my hosting provider added an entry to the web server's localhosts table so that it could properly resolve the hostname.  I'm not sure if this is your problem, but I hope it helps.

BTW, I was using DNN 4.4.1 on a W2k3 server.

OK, DOH!

I actually got this fixed aday or two after the last post.  Apologies for not posting the answer sooner...

In my case I was erroneously following the test in the help bubble too literally (e.g. smtp.googlemail.com:587) so where smtp. is the name of the server in the example, I mistakenly  prepended SMTP. to the  server name ( SMTP.mysmtpserver.myprivatechilddomain ) therefore was in error and ( mysmtpserver.myprivatechilddomain ) works perfectly!
