OK , my specific problem was the connection string "related to having multiple sql servers":

I have SQL server and SQL Express so I need to tell DNN to connect to SQL express server:

connectionString="Server=project1\sqlexpress

I was having the same problem: "This site is unavailable" message. The instructions above worked:

                        "The administrator can then trigger the install by navigiating to your relative install URL  server/install/install.aspx?mode=install"

I enter the following URL: //localhost/DNN45/install/install.aspx?mode=install

DNN45 is the virtual directory in IIS, of course.

We have this problem too, with autoupgradre set to false
We solve recyling pool, but we need real solution...

Connection string is to SQL Express local

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=localhost\SQLEXPRESS;Database=DATABASE;uid=USUARIO;pwd=PASSWORD" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

Some solution?
