I have just finished an upgrade (using the 4.3.7 then 4.5.3 install version) from 3.3.4 to 4.5.3 and all went fairly smooth. So i know the steps required.

Im now trying to upgrade the intranet which is a 3.3.4 AD intergrated install and im not winning. I previously tried an upgrade without touching the site settings and it failed. So i tried changing the Authentication settings so that it didnt using windows Authenication but it is still erroring. It doesnt even start the install process.

here is the error:

Compiler Error Message: BC30560: 'Configuration' is ambiguous in the namespace 'DotNetNuke.Security.Authentication'.

turns out the problem I was having was caused by files in the app_code folder. They must appear if you compile the site as there is no app_code folder in the DNN releases. 
I ended up deleting all of the folders out of the app_code folder and the upgrade ran after that.

Funny thing is i couldnt find anyone with the same problem and all upgrade tuts didnt metion anything about this? maybe i just wasnt looking in the right place.

oh well hope this may help some one else.
