Thanks for offer, but no thanks. I like your setup for your family site BTW.

I've tried 4.0.3 and 4.3.4 although I have gotten further with 4.0.3 to where I get error/application messages the generic ones. the "off" switch in the web.config dosn't seem to work. I have resorted to hand typing all modifications to the web.config since cut and paste may not be the best way to go when dealing with code stuff. I'm wiping my ftp space again and will try 4.0.3 again today. I have had better luck with wiping the SQL express entries out of the web.config al together.

Just to answer my own question about creating child portals in a GoDaddy manual hosted environment on the root:

  • Create a parent portal. This works fine. Put whatever for the HTTP alias.
  • Create a folder on the site that will resolve to this child portal. For example: www.domain.com/folder/
  • In that folder, take the subhost.aspx from the Portals/_default directory and copy it to this new folder.
  • Rename it to default.aspx
  • Go to the Portals page... change whatever you put for the HTTP alias to that URL. For example: www.domain.com/folder

When you visit the site, it runs the default.aspx (formerly subhost.aspx) and looks up the URL you typed in on your browser to redirect you to the appropriate portal.

My problem was that I assumed I made a child portal from a manual installation on GoDaddy. That was incorrect... I used the automated method that GoDaddy offers which automatically created the folders for me. On a manual installation, the program does not have appropriate rights to create the folder on the root.

In 4.3.4 you need to manually create the Reports folder within the App_Code Folder.  This folders is supposed to be automatically created, which is why the read & write permission for the App_Code folder, but doesn't seem to be working.

In regards to the "off" switch in the web.config, values for this are case sensitive.  Make sure you are entering Off and not off.  Also RemoteOnly is case sensitive.

Ensure you are using a reliable ftp program as the IE FTP function is not reliable and tends not to upload all files properly.
