Hi,

I'm a web designer thinking about using dotnetnuke for all future work. I will probably need to create a custom skin for every new client, as original design is always important to them. I'm wondering if an experienced person might tell me if custom skinning will add more time than what I've been used to with static HTML pages, or if it will amount to about the same. Also, what skinning limitations I should consider?

Also - I noticed my first dotnetnuke site doesn't always load quickly at first. Would it be helpful to eventually get a dedicated server and keep all of my clients there?

Thanks for your input.

t.

Hi t.,

Well, skinning takes a little getting used to, but if you get the idea, it's as simple as making a normal html website. In fact, you create a website in html and then you apply a few rules so the dnn skinning mecanism knows what to do to make your page a working skinfile.

You should defenitly download the documents and read the chapter about skinning. You'll get it right from the start, it isn't that complex :).

Well, are you running dnn from visual studios? If yes, there is your answer... vs uses a debugger and that makes your site running very slow. Online, i haven't had any problems yet... so a normal hosting does work fine.

Hope this was usefull,
sending my best regards,

Thomas

no i'm running it on a server - shared hosting at ihost. they have great customer service, by the way. i've been dealing with another host for a client, and man, what a difference. ihost is sooooo much better. but i'm guessing the shared hosting slows it down sometimes...i just counted almost 20 seconds to open.

i tried to upload a couple of the free skins mentioned on this site, but couldn't see them in the select skins area. they appeared in the drop down menu, but the thumbnail images weren't there, so i uninstalled them incase i installed incorrectly.

are some skins only compatible with certain versions of dotnetnuke, or does it matter?

I wouldnt worry too much if the thumbnails werent appearing as it most likely wont be because you installed it wrong as they are created from the images supplied in the skin pack by the author. If the author was too lazy or unprofessional etc then he probably did not included them, hence there being no preview thumbnails. This wont effect the skins at all thou, just means there no preview availble image available for the end user.

as for skin compatibility there can be a few little issues between versions of dnn, however generally speaking your ok, it only really major issues with the much older versions of dnn eg version 2x. If you follow the dnn skinning guide on this site you wont go far wrong.

Hope this helps,

Hi,

as for performance, under 'host settings' set the cashing to heavy cashing and compression to Gzip.

regards Bas
