vBulletin is probably one of the most fully-featured forum products available... anywhere...
ActiveForums is, without a doubt, the closest thing to it that you will find in the DNN world.

I would not wait.

When I first put up my site, I did not like the DNN forums at all.  Some of that may be fixed with the new release that will come one day.  I went with the dnn version of Yet Another Forum after looking at Active Forums.

I will look at the DNN forums, once they are out and see if they can match up with what I am used to.

I think that YAF is a good middle ground, and it is free too.

So the true answer in my opinion here is, how long can you really wait?

That is a really good question!  I started another DNN system for a software support site, and didn't get very far on it because the new forums were anticipated.  I went back and looked through my postings, and was surprised to find that I've been waiting to build this new website since March

Right now my workload is a bit too high to devote much time to it anyways, but it sure would be nice to be able to finish that project someday!

In my circumstance, waiting is annoying, but tolerable.  I probably would have built it with some other forums by now if there wasn't this carrot dangling out there saying "maybe soon", month after month.  *grin*

rjdafoe,

You're right YAF is a very good forum module. These guys would have a killer app if they just would integrate it more into DNN and use the membership roles!! In my opinion this is the last hurdle to position YAF as an attractive alternative for the core DNN forum module.

Cheers,

Marc

I have provided a place to view the differences between core forum versions 3.20.9 & 4.4.3, here: http://www.dnnforums.com/Resources/FeatureComparison/3209vs443/tabid/102/Default.aspx

I do not use Active Forums, so I have no basis for comparison.
