When I first put up my site, I did not like the DNN forums at all.  Some of that may be fixed with the new release that will come one day.  I went with the dnn version of Yet Another Forum after looking at Active Forums.

I will look at the DNN forums, once they are out and see if they can match up with what I am used to.

I think that YAF is a good middle ground, and it is free too.

rjdafoe,

You're right YAF is a very good forum module. These guys would have a killer app if they just would integrate it more into DNN and use the membership roles!! In my opinion this is the last hurdle to position YAF as an attractive alternative for the core DNN forum module.

Cheers,

Marc

From what I read, next release should do just that.  I am still keeping my eye on the DNN Forums as well, just in case.

However my experience with the company has been of very poor customer service/communication and they do not sell their source code so no customization is possible.

Thanks.

Ivan

I can confirm that one; sent Will a follow-up email to the one HE sent me, posted in the fAF forums, et al...last time I checked it was more than 2 weeks since a single post had been moderated in their forums...absolutely no response from anyone.

I know I shouldn't really comment on this, but....

Terp, how can you confirm problems with our customer service when you aren't even a customer?  You also don't have access to our customer forums where the majority of topics take place.  I can assure you there has been plenty of activity in the past 2 weeks.

Ivan, along with 2 of our other customers(that I know) have a perfect reason to complain.  We dropped the ball on Ivan's customization project due to staffing and scheduling issues.  He asked for a refund this morning and it was issued immediately.

Our number one priority is customer support.  Unfortunately, we haven't been able to respond to pre-sales questions as fast as we would like recently.  We aren't perfect and know that there are several communication areas where we need to improve.   We have also already made improvements in this area over the past week.  We even added a open forum for posting comments, complaints and suggestions.

Chris has done a fantastic job with the core forums and it really is a shame how long it has taken to get through the release process.  I am also looking forward to this release.  Obviously competition is good for everyone.  Not only will this release of the Core Forums encourage us to improve Active Forums even more, it will force us to improve overall as a company.

Thanks,

Will

I meant no disrespect, Will, and still plan to buy the AF with the next release; that's truly the benefits of churning out superior products--don't have to respond to "pre-sale" questions or post moderated posts in the "general questions and comments" section (though I see one of Scott's questions made it through moderation a week ago) and you still get sales.

But I feel I can comment, as I trust you did receive my follow-up emails to the email you sent me on 9/9/2007 and I trust the female who sent me a pre-sale solicitation after I downloaded the 30-day trial, the one who asked if I had any questions,  also received my emails, and I trust, given the superior product, that the forum moderation list contains a couple posts from Terp dated prior to the 9/9/2007 email you sent me, and I should probably end my response there, too...rather than address the straw man about how I am not qualified to comment on Active's communications because I am not a customer, but I  am not a customer because, well...you know...that "pre-sales" issue you are working on. I merely stated my experience in communications with Active.

But again, so long as you're still willing to welcome me into the AF family, I do intend to purchase the module the day 3.8 releases...was just posting my experience thus far, which I think was warranted and factual...despite not being a customer...the ol' catch-22.

And for the record, my first or second post in this thread was nothing but praise for AF and how I think it's a superior product and have never heard anything bad about it....though I am "not a customer" and probably shouldn't have commented.

Edit: In short, I have been begging to be a customer, but never got a response, which is why I felt qualified to comment...even asked Lee over at Creative in his forums to get a question over to you, given that he had a few responses from you posted in his forums. ;) I'm beating down the door to be a customer, Will. Open up :)

Bottom line on the question of AF vs Forum 4.04. You should choose Forum 4.04 if:

 - you want a very good forum module for free

 - you like larger / more open community for technical questions and suggestions

 - need any kind of customization now or down the road (no soruce code option with AF)

 - don't want to get locked into a commercial module tied to the longitivity of a business (this was big for us considering the no source code option with AF)

Thanks.

Ivan

I can confirm that - at least the refund process was handled promptly.
