I've tried installing from 3.0.2 to 4.5.5, and it had lots of errors in the install log and I had to recreate the aspnet* tables to be able to login at all. The site was unstable, and I ended up restoring the database.

Yesterday, I cloned the site and tried upgrading to 3.3.7, and also recieved a large number of errors in the log. I spent a few hours trying to rerun the failed scripts, but I'm still unable to login.

I could rebuild the usertables from a new install like I did for the first upgrade, but there's still no guarantee that the installation is stable.

Would it be better to do a fresh install and copy the site content over to it? If so, which version (3.3.7 or 4.5.5) should I use and which databases do I copy over?
