I'm having a problem with my passwords after upgrading from 4.6.1 to 4.6.2. I downloaded the upgrade package, unzipped over the 4.6.1installation, Then went to the site and the scripts ran, Then I set up release.config and replaced web.config with release.config.

Now I can see the site but the passwords to all accounts don't work. when I change back to the original web.config it works fine. I'm concerned though that there might be something new that I need in the new release.config

In the web.config you will find a tag "<machineKey validationKey=" with a string.  You need to copy your original one to the new Web.Config.  Those two strings are what DNN uses to encrypt and decrypt your passwords.

Thanks Mitchel...

What do you mean "use the Install package"...So use the full install package zip file instead of using the "Upgrade" version?

What would be the difference?  All files get updated instead of just the updated versions?

Also make sure the "Application" name in the web.config file is the same as your original install.

Hi Mitchel,

Gave it a shot following your blog about using the 4.6.2 install pack and NOT the upgrade pack.  tried going from 4.4.1 to 4.6.2.  still get when trying to navigate to the site:
