Within one portal (abc.xyz.com), we would like the ability to have multiple sub applications. Each sub app has its own menu/sub-menu system. Certain DNN roles for this portal will only have access to one of the sub apps but certain 'super-admins' would have the ability to switch between the different apps and make changes across the board. Switching between the apps could be done via a small module (link) that is always visible to 'super user' role. The primary reason for the sub apps is to minimize the number of menu/sub-menu options visible at any given time and to help convey the distinction. Each sub app would probably have 3-5 menu options so it becomes more unuasable if you end up with 10+ menu options (in our opinion) - especially when they are dealing with different functional domains.

Is this possible with DNN (4.5.5+) and what are the options and associated advantages/disadvantages?

Thanks

I am not aware of such an option but you can create multiple portals within the same installation to achieve nearly the same effect.
