Hi all,

This has just started happening recently, and it's beginning to cause problems.

Normally.. like for the past three years... I can browse my portals using the domain names both with and without the www prefix. It never seemed to matter whether or not both versions of the name were listed as aliases, but I do have both aliases listed for each portal all the same. Just recently I have found that Firefox no longer displays portals unless the www prefix is present. IE still displays the sites fine both ways.

  • I can view www.domain.com with both browsers just fine.
  • If I browse using domain.com, then IE works, but Firefox displays "Directory Listing Denied - This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed."

I'm finding that Firefox is displaying some of my pages with broken image links because of this, and the linked header logos don't work either because they tend to not have the www. It also affects some modules that are obviously using the non-www alias. This is DNN 4.6.2 running on a VPS and I have Remote Desktop access so I can mess with IIS if needed.

The question is.. why is it doing this all of a sudden and how can I make it work both ways again?

Any ideas are much appreciated,
Rob

I'm not sure why you are seeing this behavior all of a sudden, but regardless ... it's good SEO practice to implement a 301 redirect from non-www to www or the other way around. More info here:

Thanks Tom, I've had that article on my to-do list for quite a while now :)

That strange problem vanished again today - Firefox and IE both open both www and non-www just fine. It's bizarre.

A developer who was checking a module problem out on my server said the following:
Also, your install seems to be having an issue accessing the Common.HostSettings.Item("UseFriendlyUrls") value.

I don't know how he determined that, nor do I know what to do about it, but perhaps it has something to do with it?

Regards,
Rob

Rob, can you login as Admin and check Event Viewer of DotNetNuke (from Admin > Event (log) Viewer)

Maybe the developer just found the issue from this page.

Hi Ismet,

Yep I'm host so I have all that. The log gave no clues for that particular item. I have a feeling he figured it out from the way his module wasn't working properly. Now I need to figure out if it's a problem with my portal or not.... nothing worse than having a hidden problem that might cause who knows what! :)
