Hi,

I'm looking into ways of improving DNN and SEO.  I have read some really good things about Snapsis Pageblaster (plus I have the free one installed) and I'm just looking for some more opinions and the answers to a couple of questions:

  1. Does PageBlaster help with SEO other than with friendly URLs?
  2. Can Pageblaster help to achieve W3C compliance?  Is this even possible?
  3. Can I use it to get rid of the '.aspx' and does this .aspx have a large detrimental effect on SEO?
  4. I use a SOLPARTMENU, is this detrimental to SEO?
  5. Also looking for reviews of the SEO plug-in for PageBlaster...

I'm currently using the free PageBlaster (I hope!?!) and my site is quite speedy, although also looking into KeepAlive software.

My site is www.in8website.co.uk if anyone is interested....

Many thanks,

Anna

I cannot speak directly to PageBlaster, but the SolPartMenu is fine for SEO.  It renders using LI elements and displays as a list to text browsers.

However, here is a link to someone that is happy with PageBlaster:

  1. Does PageBlaster help with SEO other than with friendly URLs?
Yes, with replacement rules you can do all kinds of things to make any module more SEO friendly.

  2. Can Pageblaster help to achieve W3C compliance?  Is this even possible?
Yes, check out my home home page, it validates as XHTML Strict

  3. Can I use it to get rid of the '.aspx' and does this .aspx have a large detrimental effect on SEO?
No, and No it does not have a detrimental effect on SEO.
Contrary to popular belief it is also OK to have a few querysting variables.
  4. I use a SOLPARTMENU, is this detrimental to SEO?
Yes, it is never a good idea to serve different content to a search spider than you do to a regular browser.

Disclaimer:  I do not claim to be an SEO "expert", and I personally do not believe that such a thing exists outside of the walls of [put your favorite search engine name here].

John:  How would a spider/bot know if there is a different version of the textual links if it never sees it?  In addition, wouldn't it seem to be a good practice to plan for text browsers, regardless of whether they are bots or not?  Serving up optimized content for the other browser would improve the end-user experience.  Why would a site be penalized by search engines for trying to appeal to a broader audience?  Some would call this practice "accessibility".  Although I can quickly see how such practices could easily be exploited, the major search engines have algorithms that attempt to balance such implementations against known exploitation practices.

Jon Henning (SolPartMenu creator) briefly touches this topic in the comments of this page:

Can you please offer more insight into the SolPartMenu not being SEO friendly?  Judging from all of the discussions I have seen so far (not too many), this has not been verified.  Case in point, the DNN web site has used the SolPartMenu for some time now, and it was and continues to be well indexed.  (However, it would be MUCH better if SEO was a higher priority.  Many pages are missing search engine optimized content, descriptions, and keywords.)

However, I always like to keep in mind that what is SEO friendly last week or today may not be SEO friendly next week.  And that very same thing may become SEO friendly again in several months.  From the SEO feeds that I subscribe to, I have quickly learned that this is a very volatile expertise.  The best rule of thumb is to produce well-formed HTML, quality content, and maintain as much accessibility as possible.

There must be something wrong with my version of PB, then! My site doesn't validate XHMTL Strict!!!  :)

...seriously, though, I just posted this thread asking about the myriad of errors on my site.  Then I got to thinking - PB does everything else, so would it be safe to assume that rather than hunt down all my old-school align=absmiddles that I could use PB to find and replace these and the rest of my errors?

Sorry to hijack the thread for a post, but this might be one more feature that might help the original poster make her decision. :) For what it's worth, I haven't figured my way around PB yet, but so far using it for compression, http filtering, removing duplicate content, renaming some of my URLs, etc...and barely scratched the surface.

Check out John's forums for some of the other creative rules people are using...good stuff.
