Thanks for the tip. I wasn't aware you don't have to access the source code directly to write a custom module.

Sorry for posting such an apparently dumb question. I just find this dotnetnuke.com website utterly disorganized and difficult to find any useful documentation. But I went out and bought some nice 3rd-party books yesterday that seem nice and step-by-step organized. I'm starting to work through that this morning, so my ignorance should be corrected soon :-)
