In Host settings, you set a mail server. However, it is plausible - and in one case I am facing - that I need to have a different mail server for a given portal.

Is there a way to override Host settings for mail server on a portal by portal basis? If not, shouldn't there be?

Thanks -

sorry, at the moment not. We are going to look into the mail implementation though, and this is one of the things that will be looked at

This is turning into a real problem for me to this past year. Spam filters don't like it at all :(

I addition to per-portal mail servers, one needs to be able to set a non-admin account as the default sender address for the portal because the portal admin account is not always the person in charge of dealing with portal visitors. i.e. one needs to be able to separate the business operator from the webmaster role.

(I've made gemini post about this but it was removed with a note that it had been brought up before. I'm only bringing it up here just to make sure these things remain on the radar somewhere in the system.)

Rob,

where is the user, specified in site settings as portal admin used other than as sender of portal mails?

Hi Sebastian,

In modules that send email notifications. Not all modules allow one to specify a unique sending email address and only a handful allow a unique smtp server. Most just use the admin account's address as the sender along with the host smtp and that aggrevates the issue that spam filters don't like with the sender email being different from the sending server.

I have one module (Donein feedback) that (on my request) now allows either host email, admin email or any specified email to be used and I've used this feature to test filtering on Gmail, Hotmail and my own hosted services with mostly bad results. The host email is the only one that really works in a multiportal system with unique domains for all the portals. The only real solution will be when the portal can have it's own email server and a matching default email address for use by modules.

If I specify an admin address that matches the host smtp server for every sub portal then it works best, but clients run into usability issues. For example the bloggers on my portals keep thinking that I'm the one commenting on their blog posts because my host email address is in the sender field.

This example just received this morning again:

Hi R
Didn’t you do that ages ago? I just failed to authorize it

It's really not good the way it is now.
