When you navigate to the WindowsSignin page it brings up the normal windows authentication prompt. It is not filled in. You can authenticate any Windows User with that prompt screen. I don't get an error when you use the Windows Authentication Prompt.

We have Windows Server 2003 Standard edition, DNN 4.8.1, IIS 6.0.

Also other info ->The Login button on DNN brings up the old DNN authentication. No information is every picked up when someone is already signed in via the desktop windows authentication by the WindowsSignin page. But when you navigate to the WindowsSignin page you can authenticate there with any AD account. The AD user is then created into DNN as normal and any browser that you load will automatically be authenticated with that AD account until you hit logoff account and close all instances of the browser. There are no events created in the event viewer that are in error.

Oh it brings up the IIS Windows Authentication prompt. It does this even when the site is in the Intranet or Trusted sites list? I've heard of situations where this has happened but haven't been able to recreate it. I'll see if I can find a solution tomorrow but in the meantime maybe try clearing any cookies/cached files from your browser.

Just to clarify, when you're already logged in via the WindowsSignin page as you mentioned in the first paragraph, is the Login button still showing on your portal or does it look like it does her on the DNN site [Your Name] | Logout? Or do you have an Account Login module somewhere on one of your pages and that's what is blank. If it's the latter then that's normal as the account is already logged in so the fields are hidden.

Before you get too far into customization of the AD settings let's leave Hide Controls unchecked and don't put anything in the IP range textbox. Clear you cookies/cached files etc. and then hit the site. Ideally you should be automatically logged in or, at minimum, get the IIS Windows Authentication popup. If you go directly to the main page then it sounds like you haven't got the <add name="Authentication.../> uncommented in your web.config under <httpModules> (the last one in that section not the first one).

I'm about to shut things down for the night but will check the forum when I get to work in the morning as I normally do.

It does this even when the site is in the Intranet or Trusted sites list? YES. It is in the Local Intranet Sites.

or does it look like it does her on the DNN site [Your Name] | Logout? YES - It has picked up the information from the AD name and Logout

I cleaned up the cookies/cache/... as you suggest and unchecked the Hide Controls. I get the windows authentication prompt when navigating to the site. It does not authenticate automatically to the site.

Okay now I know where we're at. I'll have to check my email at home as someone else had a similar problem and emailed me when he got it fixed. He ended up having to apply a patch from Microsoft on his server and change a setting or two in his internet options but I can't remember what they were. Hopefully I still have his email.

Robin, check out this link http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871179 and also check out the following that I've cut and pasted from my email. Both are compliments of the same user that was having the same problem as you are.

All working now thanks for you help, IE6 works perfectly however in IE7 there is an option which has to be enabled

Tools > Internet Options > Security > Local Intranet > Custom Level > Scroll right to the bottom of Settings > Select "Automatic logon with current username and password" > Click Ok > Click Ok
