I managed to fix this by enabling the LoadUserProfile option in the application pool's settings. Stumbled accress this post regarding the ASP MVC and though I'd try turning it on.

Wayne,
    Thanks a bunch for your contribution here.  In addition to the change you note here, I also had to change the identity in the AppPool to 'Network Service'. 

DNN 05.01.03; Server 2008, SQL 2008
