Of Sebastians (at this moment 11k) posts, I'd say a very small percentage of them are actually useful to anybody not versed in BS answers.  He is proud of how many posts he has, but look at them... a bunch of one-liners that either don't even remotely answer the question or only halfway attempt to point in the right direction.

No, I disagree, some of his posts (like this one), are not useful, but whenever I have a question/problem it's usually Sebastian or John Mitchell (and a handful of others) - who point me in the right direction. We need people like Sebastian who take the time to help out on the Forums, despite the odd flippant post! If people keep asking the same questions without reading the FAQs/pinned posts (and previous posts) then they can expect to have an equally half-hearted answer.

I don't know if the Q1 of 2008 answers the questioners to their satisfaction, but I do not care for the tenor of the questions and the evaluation of the quality of the voluntary answers.   This is an open, voluntary project.  It will be delivered sooner and the best quality as soon as it can be readied, currently scheduled for beta late Q1.  In a transparent development effort, there will be plenty of time to test and evaluate things as they become available.   Use whatever information you find to schedule your testing and production schedules.  I would not rush to ready my test or production environment for 5.0, but if your schedule allows for it, go for it.

It is great they we are all interested in the next release, but Good Lord! Do not kick the work/gift horses in the teeth for their efforts.

I personally am not trying to knock the quality of the releases or anything like that, I'm just saying that if somebody is going to take the time to actually try to reply to a post, it might as well be a somewhat useful reply.  I know it gets frustrating hearing the same question over and over again and I agree with Rodney that people SHOULD actually search the forums and the FAQs for their answer first, but sometimes that isn't an option.  I don't know if it happens to other people but I frequently will try to search the forums and have them timeout or crash for whatever reason.  I haven't personally had the one-liner answers in any of my posts but I've seen people ask questions and get really silly answers. There are other heavy posters that answer questions and take the time to actually answer them in full (John Mitchell, for example, is good at that; Mitchel Sellers is another one).  I commend them for their efforts.

I also understand the nature of open source projects and their release schedules and such -- ie, this isn't their job and they are donating time -- but either come out and say "To be announced" instead of "it'll happen when it happens"... at least a "TBA" means that you really don't know any can't make an accurate guess but the sarcastic answer really doesn't help anybody feel good about the project.

I will say thank you to Sebastian for his follow up to this post and including more information in that follow-up.  I think that is really anybody can ask for, just a little elaboration.  Thanks to everybody who works on this project and bringing an excellent framework to the masses.

This question is asked all the time, so maybe a simple RELEASE SCHEDULE icon on the home page would help.  I'm sure thousands of people would be interested and a little half page blip on next release progress would be widely read.

Or in the least, update the link in the menu that they already have.  Last I checked it was still talking about how 4.6 is scheduled for Q3 2007 and 4.7 is tentatively scheduled for Q4 2007.  Um... yeah... outdated just a tad.  I think a nice icon on the home page would serve rather well though so long as it linked to updated information.

That link is (http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Products/Development/ReleaseSchedule/tabid/944/Default.aspx) and is located under Products -> Development -> Release Schedule
