Pardon me if this question has been asked and answered before, but I can't seem to find anything on this topic in my searches.

The site I'm discussing is for a local computer user group based in Sandusky Ohio - http://www.cebug.org/

Of concern here is how to establish blogs for articles written by members and/or contributing authors (not members of organization) and maintaining other permission settings for our forum. (Latest version of DNN core installed, BTW).

I have setup several different security roles, such Members, Contributing Authors (non-members sharing articles via our site), Visitors (desire posting privledges in our forum, but not acting as a Contributing Author), etc.

The permission settings for the forum are quite different than those given to those in various security roles within the main part of DNN. So, I think I have my permission scheme set for that area. (Crossing fingers!)

However, some of the blogs on our site will be private. That is, they should be open ONLY to Members and not those who are listed as just Registered, Subscribers, or Visitors. When I make a blog, I can see how I can set it to be private, but how do I control which role can see the private blog(s)?

Hope I explained this! Thanks!

The core blog doesn't allow you to control view permissions per post or even per blogger. You can only control view for the entire module. The public/private post option is really for setting articles as draft or published.

You could run two separate blog modules with view permissions set differently, but that's not going to be very flexible in the long run. I'd suggest looking into Ventrian's News Articles module, and while you're at it, save yourself a lot of future drama and also look at Active Forums. These are commercial modules but if the content being published is worth anything at all then the modules are well worth the few Dollars they cost.

You might also find use for Active Forums as the publishing tool for the articles. It makes sense seeing as people can comment and rate articles and the permissions give you full control over who can see and do what. I'm all for reducing the number of interfaces for contributors and consumers alike.
