I'm trying to install the latest "Installation" package of DNN on an XP Pro SP2 machine.  I was able to work through most of the preparation steps, but when I tried to set up the read/write permissions for ASPNET, the pop-up screen for the root folder (nor any other folder) does not have a security tab.  The other four tabs shown in the DNN Installation instructions are in the pop-up window: General, Sharing, WebSharing, and Customize.  But no Security tab.  I am logged in as Administrator.

For kicks, I tried the DNN installation without having set the permissions.  Of course I did not get far.  I get an error stating: Server Error in '/dnn_site' Application.  Failed to access IIS metabase.  I presume due to skipping the permissions step...

Any idea why XP won't give me the security tab?

Hey grantnlee,

I think this article will help: Missing or No Security Tab Found in Windows XP Professional

Thanks Ian, that was definitely the issue.

Once I had access to the security tab, I went to assign privledges to ASPNET, but that user is not available in my list of users and groups.  The installation instructions don't have me creating this user anywhere.  I assumed it was created as a part of one of the other packages such as IIS or SQL, but that did not happen.

Am I supposed to separately install ASP.NET or VS2005?  It's not called out in the instructions as a pre-requisite.

Thanks in advance!

Hey grantnlee,

Make sure your location is set appropriatly (local machine) and then you can type in ASP.NET and check name

But if you want to follow the long way and make sure you have the appropriate account selected, I think you're best bet is to do the following (as the asp.net user can be hidden):

Once you're on the security tab

  1. Hit Add button
  2. Hit Locations button
  3. Select machine name (local computer), select OK
  4. Select "Advanced"
  5. Select "Find Now" - a list of all users will be displayed
  6. Select the ASP.NET user from this list

Take care,

Ian

Hmm...  Went through the steps easily enough.  But no ASPNET user showed up in the search.   I do have a NETWORK SERVICE group in the list, but I was under the impression that was not used for DNN on XP Pro.  Tried anyway with no change in results.
