Being a DNN newbie I have a question about the following: Suppose I have 10 portals in DNN, who all have their own skin. The HTML (DIV tags only) of all of these skins are the same, the only difference between the skins is the CSS and images they use.

Maybe there is a way that the skins can "share" the same HTML, so when the HTML changes, you don't have to change it on all skins?

And ofcourse in this HTML the corresponding CSS must be included "dynamically".

If a solution within DNN isn't possible, maybe there is a nice best practice outside of DNN?

Thanks!

You can use an include:

<!--#include file="includes/_images.inc-->

add this to aal your ascx files and put all the HTML in the include file

Thanks for your reply, Timo!

Maybe I misunderstood your solution, but where do I put the HTML file, because all of the skins have their own folder? I think the HTML should be centralized outside of the skins folder?

And how does this centralized HTML "know" which CSS to include, as this has to be a different one depending on the skin?

I really hope this solution can work, but a quick test with using a ASCX who includes a HTML file left me with an empty skin... :(

You don't have to have seperate folders for the skins, you can group them in a folder.

you can do this:

Folder Myskins:

    File Red.ascx                  //Red Skin
File Red.css                    //Red Skin specific CS

    File Green.ascx               //Green Skin
File Green.css                //Green Skin specific CS

File: Skin.css                  //CSS for all the skins in this folder
    Folder Includes:
File myinclude.inc   //The include for all or some of the skin...

Hope it's clear...

Hi !

I would install the skin using the Host account in order to make it accessible for all Portals, then use the portal.css file to overrides the rules which need to be overruled (the background-image property in case), and place the images in /Portals/(ID)/Skins/SkinName/Medias/ or something similar.

The Timo's solution works too.
