Recently our server was compromised which forced us to transfer all our files to a new server.

My DNN sites are functioning, but I am receiving the following error on my forum:

A critical error has occurred.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

I do not want to loose all of my users posts. It is a very valuable asset for my users. Please help. www.israelnationaltrail.com

The Forum Module does not using thier own connectionstring to the database.  It is using the connectionStrings in the web.config file.  Make sure you have setting both connection strings as well, and using the right machineKeys and objectQualifier (if you are using one).

I am sure it happens in your configuration.

I looked at my connectionStrings in the web.config file and everything is filled out. I did not setup this re-install of DNN on our production server, so could it be possible that an incorrect password could cause this?

Yes it can.  If you using a backup from the database on your testsystem, you have check the username, have the dbo access, have the user access to the database?  This have be checked on the SQL Server.

Also make sure you have no misstypes in the web.config file.  Some Hosting needs that the databaseOwner is a other than "dbo", you can ask about this the hoster. If a other databaseOwner is need you can not use the backup, if you work on you testdatabase with the owner as "dbo".  On this cenario all database tables, and spocs will written new, and a install is performing.  This caused then many problems with your DNN.

Thank you so much for all your help. We were able to solve the sql issue. Most of our modules are now funcitoning again with the exception of our forum. We are now getting a "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error on our forum. I'm not sure why it would be null. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
