John:

Sorry, I couldn't let it pass, it is not often that you can make a wrong century joke.

Now back to your questions.  I am not familiar with Joomla but am a little familiar with DNN.

I think that DNN will definitely satisfy your requirement to group users by logical groups, in DNN lingo, Roles.  DNN has a pretty robust user roles and groups infrastructure that the modules can take advantage of.  This architecture is also flexible and expandable at the admin level without having to modify the underlying code.

Regarding the document management functionality, I think that you will need a third party module for that (or develop your own in any .Net language).  You can look at what is available in the commercial DNN market place in the following links: http://marketplace.dotnetnuke.com/ and http://www.snowcovered.com.

Hope this helps, I also hope that you give DNN a chance.

And welcome back to the future... (sorry again)

Carlos

DNN doesn't have Joomla's content magaement built in, but there are a number of third party modules that will do it for you.  Beyond that, DNN is far more extensible than Joomla, as Joomla was more prupose-designed and not developed as a framework for developing portal sites, like DNN.

2. Anyone know of a good (I've seen NukeTransfer, but no answer from them yet...) secure file sharing module, that has the following functionality:

    a. Email to user when file is uploaded and assigned.

    b. Logical groups of users.

That's twice a yes. And ... webDAV access of these documents, also per user permissions, content search, categorization etc etc ... And all of this on WISDOM (Windows IIS, SQL, DotNetNuke, and Modules)

Sure, leave it to Peter to talk about his own product! :) In all seriousness, DMX is probably one of the best solutions out there for document management until you start spending Sharepoint type cash. I wasn't aware of assigning files to people and having them e-mailed (DMX 4 vice 3 capability?), but I've been using it extensively at work, and it's been doing a phenomenal job! I was going to recommend it before Peter jumped in, now I'll just back him up on it. It's a really great product (DMX 3 or 4).
