Looks like maybe a file didn't get deleted.  Check the file on the server, check permissions to the file and folder.

On the server the folder that the container shows up in gets locked and I can't do anything to it. It still shows up in the file manager but I can't manually delete it, change (or view) its properties or open the folder itself. Before I get the error there is no problem doing any of these things.

Ok. Here's what seems to be happenning:

  1. I upload the container.
  2. I preview the container.
  3. I close the preview page.
  4. I go back to the Host->Skins page and delete the container package.

At this point the container package does not disappear from the dropdown box. If I try to select the package from the dropdown box it throws an error:

A critical error has occurred.
Access to the path 'c:\inetpub\dnn 4.8.2\portals\_default\containers\vii_containers_seagreenandwhite' is denied.

If I remote desktop to the server and try to access the folder I get the behavior described in my post immediately above. Some process in DNN is not releasing the files so I cannot access them to delete them.

Does anyone know what process I would need to kill to free the files?

I downloaded Process Explorer from Sysinternals and found that the w3wp.exe (IIS worker process) was not releasing the handle on the directory. When I manually release the handle the directory is deleted (and all the currently open DNN file handles are killed) and everything works again. Is this a DNN bug or a problem with my server (Server 2003)?

If you restart the app from the Host Settings page does that do the trick? I know it's not an answer to what the problem might be but it ought to do the trick if it really is DNN holding on to the files.

A few people including myself are having trouble deleting files in the file manager. It seems to hold onto files or folders and throws an error when you try and delete them. I get this a lot when uploading an archive and then want to delete it after the files have been extracted. Perhaps there is a related bug in all of this.

I've only really noticed it in very recent versions.. perhaps 4.7 or 4.8 onwards

Rob
