This happens because of your database server timing out. A possible cause is that you've already have too many child portals. How many sub-portals do you have in total?

We have about 120 child portals already.

However this problem only started last night AFTER I upgraded to DNN v4.8.2

While I agree about a database timeout (I'll try running a SQL Profile Trace while trying to create a portal), I can't help but think it could also be connected to a problem with the sites cache. This appears to have never been purged (after about 2 years) and it is HUGE. So big in fact that the Clear Cache link (HostSettings -> Performance Settings) times out when attempting this action. I have just created another thread about this - can I clear down the cache by manually deleting the files in each portals cache folder?

Im new to dnn and so only had one other child portal before this problem. and I haven't upgraded.  You are right about the portal being set up but not registering the alias, I checked and same thing is happening to me.  I've contacted my host to see if there is a problem on that end but they don't think so. I emptied my cache just in case and didn't have any problems but like I said my cache is small because my site has not been up long.

Actually I have one other problem in addition.  In addition to not creating the domain alias it also did not load the template properly so the site doesn't look right.  My guess is that it just timed out before the process was finished though.

the error encountered by SupaHoopsa seems to be caused by missing file permissions for the caching files to the virtual user ("Network Service"). Make sure to grant full permissions to the virtual users after unzipping the files.
