Roger,

Thanks for the quick and very comprehensive answers - I'll have another go in the light of your recommendations.

I'm surprised that you are not keen on release notes, though - although your answer to my question 4 implies there are some release notes somewhere. I'll see if I can find them on the website. I think perhaps, with respect, if you are very close to a project it is often hard to see how it looks to an outsider, but that's just a personal view.

Ernst Peter,

Thanks for the explanation - no problem. Will remove the links.

You missed the intent of my comment, probably my fault . Yes I believe we should have release notes, here is a link to the set for 4.0.1. They don't seem to get included with the PA, not sure why. However these notes are intended to detail what is in the release, rather than a guide on how to do development against the code. The diffreence being, the detail of what is in the release is specific to the module. Whilst how to develop against the code is generic.

Hope that is clear.

Roger

Am almost up and running now with the help of your blog - very clear. By the way, I love the zoomed images - are these generated by another DNN module?

Just a couple of points that I wasn't sure about:

1. Minor typo in your blog: When you say Add project DotNetNuke.Events.SqlDataProvider to solution: line 4 should read: Select "DotNetNuke.Events.SqlDataProvider.vbproj"

2. Roger Selwyn in his reply above suggested that I need not install the Source edition of DNN, just the Install. Hence, I did not have access to the Library code and was not able to follow your instructions to make the DotNetNuke.Events project reference DotNetNuke.Library instead of Bin - is this likely to cause me a problem? Will I need the source edition of DNN after all?

3. In your instructions to replace bin references to project references for Events module code you did not change the reference to DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.SqlDataProvider to DotNetNuke.Events.SqlDataProvider in the project - was this intentional, or an oversight? (the zoomable image shows the other events code references set to project but SqlDataProvider left as bin).

Thanks a lot,

Steve

Yes, thanks - found it on the website. Sorry for the confusion - that must be where I saw the point about using VS2008.

Since I am not very familiar yet with the Events module, the list of changes didn't mean much to me. I can see that its vital to have these if you are part of the development team or have been an active Events module user for some time and eagerly awaiting fixes.

I've not found it hard to get up and running quickly with the aid of all your help - and it's come thick and fast - no complaints there! But I was just thinking it might take some of the pressure off you guys to collect something in a simple readme file - even just a few links to threads like this, for the next person to tread this path.
