smtp.gmail.com didnt work for me without a port number.. The following sort of works for me.. Server smtp.gmail.com:587 authentication basic ssl checked Username michelle.sollicito@gmail.com Password XXXXXXXX It works because I receive the SMTP config test email at my email address.. except that it gives the following error and then I cant go forward: Server Error in '/' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thread was being aborted. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Threading.ThreadAbortException: Thread was being aborted. Source Error: An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below. By the way, I got that error 4 times.. when I tried it the fifth time it worked - seems gmail is often late in replying and the timeout is not long enough

Sorry I didnt realize I had to put html formatting into these postings.. see if this is a bit better

smtp.gmail.com didnt work for me without a port number..

Upgrading isn't always an immediate option for a production site unfortunately.

Not always an immediate option, but for a version running with such a significant security vulnerability it should be strongly considered - at least to get it to 4.9.5... trust me, I just paid the price for running an older version on a production site. Luckily, we had good database and file backups and we caught it within a couple hours of the attack... still, I'd recommend taking the site to the final 4.x build - most your modules shouldn't have too much problem with the upgrade, but you can always run a test scenario on a dev site/server to be sure.

I just want to point out that I have these exact same problems with the very latest version of DotNetNuke so upgrading wont help
