Hi Joe,

Do you see any views in your old database (or your new one)?

What are the highest versions reported in the Versions table, both in your old database and new (look for the highest VersionId)?

Does DNN work properly prior to your RESTORE DATABASE call?

I'm afraid it's probably going to be a game of twenty-questions for a bit.  Bear with me.

Brandon

This feels as if all the files are not unzipping correctly. Try unzipping the files on another computer. I recently had an upgrade that went waaaay wrong because the computer would not unzip all the files. I don't know why this was but it was the problem. Also if you have a short attention span and want a lot of pictures, try these links:

  • Setting-up the Environment (using IIS)
  • Setting-up the Environment (without IIS)
  • Setting-up the Development Environment on Windows Vista (using IIS)

Unzipping might explain some of the first few problems, but the lack of the vw_Portals view wouldn't be caused by a file deployment issue.  There are probably two (or more) separate issues going on here, which is why the problem is more difficult than usual to debug.

If I had to guess, it's a combination of a file problem (as you indicated) and a database restore issue (when restoring the production database into the live environment).  I guess we'll see.

    Hi Joe,

Others here are probably more qualified to help you with the troubleshooting as I admit my experience with DNN is a short 2 years but my question to you is more of the process you've followed to get a live production site down to a local machine for development.  Reading through your post it looks like the process was to first upgrade the live site to 4.8.4, correct?  Did this go smoothly with no problems?  If so, I'm confused as to why you would unzip and install the 4.8.4 install package and restore the db of this install with the live db backup.  You also stated that you copied over some skin files from the live site to the local install. Do you only have access to the portal directory or do you have access to the root folder of the installation of the live site? I would guess it's access to the root since you stated you upgraded the site to 4.8.4  I guess what I'm questioning or not understanding is why you did the local install in the first place.  My process, from the recommendation of others here on the forums, has been to simply zip up the live site's root directory, ftp down the zip file, make a backup of the live db, and then unzip the files into a newly created directory on my local machine, assign permissions, point IIS to it, restore the db and make the appropriate changes to the portal alias table.

This may be exactly what you're doing so forgive me if I have misunderstood but if it is not and you are first installing 4.8.4 locally and then trying to restore the live sites db and copy down select files from the live site to this new install, I find this to be a more complicated approach than needs be.

Ok, it is with great embarrasment that I state that the cause of much of the problems I was having was that I was not using the 4.8.4 backup of the live database like I thought. As I discovered late in the game I was using 4.6.3 instead. So with that being said. I did a backup again (if you want it done right, do it your self and don't rely on others.) I wiped everything, did it again. All worked up until I get the Module Load Warning on the local site (after the database restore.

Ok, so the other issue is that I can not log in using an exisiting account (admin) but I can register for a new account and make it admin within the database and then log on using that account (sounds like the passwords are not being restored properly or using a different method to decrypt. Ever heard of that before.

So I have two issues, one is the Module Load Warning (yes the modular have been placed in the DesktopModules folder and the permissions are correct. I must be missing a key secret to getting the modules to load. The only folders that I have copied from the live server to the local server are the DesktopModules and Portals

    Clues?

    Thanks
    Joe
