I'm running SQL Server 2005 Express.

With regard to the Application Pooling,  I'm not too sure.

I had previously experimented by selecting properties of the virtual folder, then clicking create under application settings.

This changed the error....... into an even bigger one.

I suspected that create application is similar to compiling a program, and may indeed be a way of compiling VB,C# etc source code into binary, but that is merely a guess.

I also suspect that browsing to http://localhost/DotNetNuke does the same sort of thing that the Visual Web Developer Starter kit does when you hit Ctrl F5, runs through the web.config, creates a database etc etc.

I have a hunch its an ASP 2.0 security issue, I remember reading a post about Medium trust, but it didn't seem 100% relevant, as I felt sure it was for the DNN 3 upgraders.

Again all guess work......

Hmm you are raising things out of my level of knowledge.. I know the application pooling was a specific comment made by my colleague after he'd spent hours going through documentation.

4.02 I believe requires full trust.

Guess work .. naaah.. give it a more official name like... R&D

I'd like to try setting Full Trust..... only I don't know how to do that..

Also not sure where I find the application pooling.... Is that the same as creating an application pool from the virtual directory, or is it some kind of performance setting I am missing?

I'm using IIS 6 , also can you clarify if 4.0.2 web.config connection string is default to sql 2005 express edition when I looked at the connection string I felt sure the default was correct for my environment, but I've noticed others changing it.
I've noticed some people using clear text password for powerful accounts such as sa and local service accounts, I think I even saw someone post thier own administrator password as part of a connection string dump to the forum... (please god tell me they changed it after the post  )

Question for me is how well is the web.config file protected?

I know switching my environment (i.e SQL Express) maybe a work around, but I've got time to spare and I'd like to stick with what I've got for now, unless that means many weeks without even trying DNN.

I'd like to get in on this conversation.  I see Nina is "Core Team"...cool.

There seem to be issues with 4.02 and subfolder(subwebs) vs. subdomains.  I have read lots of posts of folks having these problems.  I have a new server 2003/IIS6+SQL2K and have been trying to run DNN 2.X and a new install of 4.02 at the same time.  I can't get through an upgrade so if I can get both sites working I can cut and paste the content.  I have set it up twice and each time I get everything looking good stand alone, and then try to cut it over to live, and it all falls apart.  The DNN4 starts getting a config error about 'data' is already defined.  It's like the application pool separation stops working when I go live. Can't use two separate boxes because I port forward my router and can only forward to 1 IP.

I am new to IIS6 but I bought a book and everything. I get the whole application pool thing and have separate pools for the two sites. It does not seem to help.  I've checked permissions and access till I'm blind and read everything I can find on it. I think I'm good there.  I have not worked with a subdomain so I guess I will try that next.  I guess I don't understand what the difference is between subfolders and subdomains and why DNN would care. Can you enlighten me?

Another observation is the old stuff seems to run fine under ASP 2.  Is it possible they made it backwards compatible.  If so, you should not care about running the two versions.  Just run everything on 2.  Can anybody confirm that?

I just loved DNN2 and I just can't believe how cool DNN4 is.  They fixed all my pet peeves.  I bought a new skin for it and it looks sweet!  All by itself everything works fantastic! I have been trying to get them to run together for weeks now.  It just does not seems like it should be this hard.  Hope someone has a magic bullet for me. Thanks for listening.
