I'm looking for advice on how best to transfer a complete site from a development environment (hosted) to a local production server.

Any tips hints or recommendations would be very appreciated.

The best and easy procedure is a backup/restore for the db, and a file copy of the whole file structure.
Then on the  production server, adjust the web.config connection string to point to the new db server and adjust the PortalAlias table to reference the new url.

I want to make sure I understand this correctly because I too am getting ready to transfer a DNN installation from our lab web server to our production web server.  The steps would be,

  • Transfer the SQL database from server to server.
  • Transfer the DNN folder with all of its contents to the new server.
  • Then follow the installation process as I did when I first installed DNN, making sure the connection strings are correct.
  • I should then have an exact copy of the DNN installation now on the production sever?

That’s a very good question.  Too bad it seems no one has a thought on it.  I have another question about web.config.  Is web.config changed during the installation?  I would love to use the web.config I had perfected on the lab server on the production server.
