I'm not familar with the protocols of open-source software development, but isn't there a "either sh*t or get off the pot" rule?  Either the current developers don't have time or don't care anymore and others are willing to step up to the plate to get the job done.

Just thought I would chime in to the conversation for a moment.

We are waiting, as anxiously as anyone (maybe more), for the forums update also.  Having worked with Chris for the last several years now, I know him to be a very productive, very committed and very quality conscious guy.  But most of you guys already knew that *grin*.  Over the last few months, there have been several occasions upon which Chris has inquired about our readiness to dogfood... and YES... we're ready!

All of our projects run a little differently; and this IS the nature of things.  Can it be improved?  Yes.  But finding folks willing to do the enormous work of managing projects is a difficult business.  Not only is there a lot to do just to create a good application, but there is also drudgery of managing issue logs, dealing with infrastructure out of your control, handling inquiries & forums, etc.  This year we're going to be working very hard to make life a little easier for team & community contributions alike.  But the willingness to step-up and be responsible long-term is still a pretty rare gift.

Join me in giving Chris a little positive encouragement.  It would not surprise me to hear from him about "readiness to dogfood" again here real soon ;)

Cheers

Having totally understand Chris's Forum issues, i saw that on his DNNFORUMS.com site that he was in fact ready to Dogfood the module back around Halloween. Thus i was surprised to read in Gemini that not only was there bug fixes on the "to do" list around that timeframe (i was curious to see what his post referred to as "found bugs") but there was also new features and enhancements submitted by him. It sounds like Chris is the same natured as a friend of mine. They take pride in what they built and really really will not release a product unles they are 99.999999999999999% sure all bugs are gone and pretty much every scenario is tested. This is a rare breed and not the Mircosoft way but i do commend him if i am accurate. It is rare that many software houses work this way. Even at my work place  i have seen the "Lets get it into production for the customer and worry about the bug fixes later." (this has put pie on our face more times then making us looking good on delieverables.)

So rather then seeing a 4.5.0.0, 4.5.0.1, and moreso, i am glad it is being dogfooded by his forum beta team then having my users complain "it is worthless" and then i have a ticking timebomb waiting before i am told to "walk the plank".

So they either learn on thier own by building thier own, pay for a different one and still have to way for different bug or feature requests Or wait patiently for the greatly anticipated release with the new feature requests placed in (then i can get rid of the other PM module that users are complaining about not working 100%)

So now that the holidays are over.. i am sure Chris is racking and stacking his time. As we enjoyed the holidays with Family, i can not fault Chris for spending time with family.

Thank you,

Dean

I do appreciate the efforts of the team, however, as I have been using the latest forum module for over a year now with some very significant bugs the only things I know from the team are some 9 months of being led on and with nothing whatsoever made available to sort the bugs.

Of course that will change when I see something but at the moment it's no different to a year ago apart from me being told for the last 9 or so months that they are releasing a fix soon.

1. Many of us have been asking for bug fixes as a single priority but this isn't what has happened.

2. We ask for an idea when the module may be released... and we are either told nothing, or told that it looks weeks away and then given no further information.

All I had really been wanting was a fix for the notifications which just don't work right.
