Hi,

I am using the quick start version of DNN (I think). I am also working with VS2008 and SQL server 2005 on Vista. I have managed to create a site called "DotNetNuke Website1" and got as far as seeing the default.aspx in my browser. I was pleased, as this meant I had been sucessful in creating a new connection string and app setting. I don't really want to call my site Website1, however. So I created "DotNetNukes Lesley" (client's name), using the same connection string. When I hit ctrl f5, it all builds but falls flat when the browser stuff starts, it all goes wrong. The server icon at the bottom of my screen tells me it is called "http://localhost:50932/DotNetNuke Lesley". The browser looks for "http://localhost/dotnetnuke website1". I am preserving caps/lack of caps and the other website is not running at the same time. What do I need to change?

Ideally, I would like to call my site just "Lesley" but that had the same problem.

If you are a developer and using VS2008 you might consder the source version of DNN, although if you are just developing modules the quick start version will work I believe.
I would set DNN up under IIS under Vista and I would not bother with casini.
You can then use your hosts file (search under the windows folder) to point to "lesley" as 127.0.0.1 and then install DNN to this website (portal alias).
Make sure your Network service/ASP.NET account gets full permissions to the folders, and that you have the correct web.config in place if you use the source version.
If you search the blogs/forums you will probably get much more detail on this.

Many thanks!

Alex,

Thanks for prompt reply. Yes I am a developer and I probebly should give the source version a go. I have no idea what "cassini" is though. Can I have more than one alias on IIS, as I can on WAMP?

At the moment, I am a total noob as far as CMS is concerned and have just used html/css and various server languages. I like C# best, so I thought I'd give this a go. Unfortunatlely I am having trouble even getting off the ground.

Casini is like a cut down version of IIS that comes with Visual Studio. It makes life easy in some scenario, but everytime you launch a site it uses a different port number (see the URL you specified). In my case at least this is not desirable.

You can enter many aliases, but get the first one going before you worry about this. In the case of a local installation you can simply add multiple entries to the hosts file pointing to 127.0.0.1 and make sure the corresponding portal alias is set up in DNN.

You can later change the scenario once you deploy to a full server environment.

One thing I forgot it that you must make sure you point your project to the IIS install via Visual Studio (I think you right click/properties the web project, and find the settings under there). Note you don't really need to use Visual Studio when you run DNN for the first time so sort this out later once you decide to tinker. Log in and check out DNN first!

DNN is on the whole written in VB but you can develop C# modules.

1) Copy your DNN files the appropriate directory
2) Make sure you have correct web.config ready and your files has appropriate permissions
3) Set up your hosts file
4) Run DNN in your web browser and follow the instructions.

This is very basic instructions and you will probably need to google more detailed ones unless anybody else would care to post a link here.
Good luck!

Are you trying to create a website or a module?  You do not need to do anything in VS if you just want a website.  No building or compiling is required ... just get the install or source version and follow any of the online installation guides .. like my one here: http://www.bestwebsites.co.nz/dotnetnuke/easy-dotnetnuke-installation-guide/

JK.

ps the "Starter Kit" is very badly and misleadingly named.  It is NOT for people who are just starting out.  It is for those who want to build modules.  Use the install or source version instead.

You know your website is cool, so why not let your users help you by spreading the word on social networking sites - get the DotNetNuke Social Bookmarks Module with 57 different ways to add social bookmarks to your site ... or download the FREE demo right now
