I am using DotNetNuke 3.22 and trying to modify a searchresults.ascx file by inserting the <script> below into the datagrid.  

HTML and Javascript is inserted into the file just fine - however, they are in the file OUTSIDE of the datagrid.

DNN keeps reporting a compiling error when the <script runat="server"> section is inserted ANYWHERE in the file.

You will notice that the script attempts to extract the extension of the resulting hyperlink and needs to run everytime the hyperlink control is come upon.

Maybe I have my logic completely upside down and this is not possible.  I am not very familiar with .NET so any humbling advice would be appreciated:
