Hi Terence:

Mate thanks for the detailed response and sorry to be confusing.

Your 1st paragraph is what I'm trying to achieve, i.e.: "Have multiple domains under one install with each domain pointing to the same install and as Parent Portals on the same IP address".

Yes, that's right email addresses are set up separately in the servers Control Panel for the hosted domain.

However the problem is, if I follow this protocol:
1) Set up a parent portal with domain www.myclientdsomain.com.au
2) Set this domains DNS to my server IP
----------All is good at this point------------
3) Set up a domain hosting account on my server www.myclientsdomain.com.au (which is a re-seller A/C and allows for multiple domain hosting)
    a) I can now add all sorts of email addresses/accounts for this domain
----------Now here's the problem----------
4) If I now go to my browser and type in the URL http://www.mycleintsdomain.com.au I get an error because the server recognises the following 2 things:
    a) It has a hosted domain account, PLUS
    b) It recognises a domain alias under the DNN installation for the same domain
It therefore cannot resolve.

Is that clear? Am I doing something really basically wrong that's so obvious I'm going to go 'duh' when you tell me?

Thanks again,
Josh

I wlll assume that all is set for the client domain, up through item 3.
I would also assume that you already have DNN running under one domain, such as yourdomain.com.au.

Between item 3 and 4, you would need to create the new portal in DNN.   You cannot browse to the client domain until you create the new portal with that domain.  Login to your existing DNN site, yourdomain.com.au using the dnn host account.    Under the Host, Portals menu option, add a new portal for domain myclientomain.com.au, setting it as a parent type.    This will take you through the setup and when setup is completed, it will take you to the new site under the client domain.   After that, you should be able to browse to it anytime.

If you are able to create the portal in DNN, but you get an error when it tries to take you to the new site, it is then an issue with IIS (back to item 3).  I guess you are using a control panel of some type to setup the domain account, instead of working within IIS directly.  Therefore, it is difficult for me to help through this process not knowning what you can do.   When you created the account in step 3, I would assume you can at least set the path of where the webiste files are, similar to what was done for the first portal, so it is going to the same install files.

Hi Terence:

Again thank your for the detailed response.

I forgot to leave that step out. Yes I do then also set up a Parent Portal in the DNN installation.

The server I have domains on uses PLESK (don't know if you're familiar with that). Anyway at present I have to add the domain alias myclientdomain.com.au under my domain e.g., yourdomain.com.au in order for DNN to display the appropriate web site. The limitation here on having aliases on my hosting domain is that you cannot then add email address accounts.

If I then ad a new dmain to my host account on my server using the PLEASK control Panel, www.myclientdomain.com.au so I can generate emai accounts for this domain, however I cannot add this domain if my own domain where the DNN installation is (yourdomain.com.au) has a domain alias the same as what I'm trying to create a new domain as it just doesn't accept it and rightfully so.

I can do the following as your suggesting in your last paragraph:

1) Create a Parent Portal in DNN (www.myclientdomain.com.au)
2) Create a new domain account on my PLESK server (www.myclientdomain.com.au)
3) I can then set this domain to forward to a URL.
However I do not know with Parent Portal setups in DNN on how to resolve the URL. I can if it's a child portal, but cannot work it out if it's a Parent Portal. Assume the Parent Portals alias is www.myclientdomain.com.au and the Portal ID is 25, what woul dbe the URL to resolve to theis web site?

Also on another topic, if DNN in architecture only really has 1 web form 'Default.spx' and the content is provided via the database, then is this any good for indexing with search engines? For example if a web site in a traditional sense has a About Us page which would resolve in the following URL: 'http://www.example/aboutus.aspx' then this can be indexed for search engines, but how does DNN handle this if there isn't 'really' a physical 'About Us' page?

I can't even get Google to recognise my main DNN installation in it's search. I have verified the site but the robots just keep throwing a 404 Not Found Error.

Thanks,
Josh

Well, I am sorry, I am not at all familiar with Plesk.   You may want to do a search on plesk in the forum, and hopefully find how others handled parent portals.  I found many posts, but didn't read through them all.   As example, here is one that talked about some of the issues http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/107/threadid/234273/scope/posts/Default.aspx      Set the search date back about a year, and search on plesk.

As for the other topic, hopefully someone can jump in, since I cannot answer those.
Sorry I could not help.

Accepted Answer

Thanks Terence.

I ended up having to get my host to add in the IIS headers. Just like you originally suggested.

Thanks for your help.
