I have the assortment of large drives, big monitors, etc. but that's partly because my work is not strictly developing for DNN.  I have VirtualPC/VirtualServer on all my systems and use them extensively for development work.  I'll carry a VM on a USB key between systems and fire it up for the same result on each system I develop on.

I'm actually in the same boat as Jeff.  DNN is only a minor fraction of the development work I do.  I also handle development for Client-Server applications that essentially run several of the departments in the Credit Union I work for, other web applications, as well as server side applications to handle processing large amounts of data.

I'd venture a guess that a lot of it *is* that we are all major geeks and like to have overpowered machines, but there are definitely enough requirements in there to warrant the power.

EDIT: Oh, and regarding large hard disk space... my computer at work has 500gb taken up between CD/DVD images from my MSDN subscription, and roughly 2gb in my "dev" folder consisting of code, images, notes, diagrams, etc.  Downloading that fresh from source control is always a nightmare.  At home, things are a little more spread out because the computer is used for gaming and other things as well.  A good 800gb is spent in family photos and videos.

My development machine is a Vista32 laptop. I just ordered some more memory today and will be installing Vista64 in the coming days/weeks.

  • Dell Inspiron 1420 Laptop (smaller laptop)
  • 2GB RAM
  • Vista32 Ultimate
  • 7200RPM HD
  • 1.5ghz dual core processor

This works quite well, and I'm comfortable not having the latest and greatest hardware as a trade off for being able to take my primary machine with me when I'm traveling.

Looking forward to the memory upgrade though - only 50 bucks for 4GB (2x2) of RAM these days....CHEAP CHEAP FUN FUN :)

My machine isn't nearly as cool as some of these

I have an asus laptop running Vista Ultimate (32bit).
2ghz
3gb ram (I tried to put in 4, but apparently it only has 1 ram slot)
150GB hard drive (I have a server with 500Gb that I use for my version control)

The laptop has a 17" screen and I attach a 24" monitor to it.

Currently i have a powerful desktop with 20 Inch LCD Monitor

Quad Core Q9300

8 GB RAM

Necessary Hard Drive Space

SQL Express

Virtual Machine tool and virtual pc's for simulating tests.

I run all the tests via virtual machines, host system uses Vista x64,

I also have a Toshiba Laptop it uses Vista x32, has dual core AMD cpu and 3 gb ram, i mainly use it for showing my work to clients.

But the most powerful hardware we need are our eyes and hands i guess :)

I'm with a few of the others as well, I do a lot of DNN, but I do a lot of other stuff as well.

The biggest advantage of all is the dual monitors for multi-tasking and to avoid constant switching between windows.
