I have been a hobby/casual user of dnn for a school's website for a couple of years. Now however, I want to build a commercial site with DNN. I started to take a look at how fast web pages load on busy DNN sites, so I came to DNN itself for the first look, keeping in mind the user count on the front page. I have to say, this is a slow site and it concerns me. I mean no disrespect because there is not another package I would rather use than DNN. Is this site on a dedicated server? Why is the premier installation so slow on every computer I try it on, with different connections? I have compared to other sites, even my measly school site. I seem to get much faster page renders with my site on a shared server than is happening here. Does DNN bog down this much?  Or can I overcome this with better hardware?

Thanks in advace for anyone's insight. I still love DNN!!!!!!

We've never done anything "special" to tune DotNetNuke or make it faster on the main site.  Traditionally, we've done that on purpose in the spirit of "eating our own dogfood".  However, we've grown enough now that we are looking into some alternatives simply because the sheer weight of "popularity" is becoming overwhelming.

The DotNetNuke site is ( all too frequently ) the target of a number of DDoS attacks of one sort or another... when we are not on our toes, our HTTP traffic and bandwidth utilization doubles from "unfriendly" sources.  Why?  Who knows... its surprisingly difficult some days to do nice things for people without getting beaten up for it... go figure *grin*.  This week alone there have been several thousand blind login attempts on our back office infrastructure.  By way of traffic, we are serving as many as 10 million page views a month on this site alone... and about 224 transactions per second on our database server ( which handles a number of sites and functions ).

Our friends at MaximumASP are patiently waiting for us to outline our needs so that we can upgrade our infrastructure.  You  can be assured that this will be on our agenda in the coming weeks.

Thanks for your enthusiasm!

Scott, thanks for taking the time to detail the present situation. Dotnetnuke.com is surely getting many multiples of  hits more than I expect to receive on my site. I should be safe for a long time!

Actually... I just posted a blog here about our traffic experiences this week.

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/BlogID/18/Default.aspx

Probably the most interesting statistic there is that for a period of about 9 hours, we were serving pages at the sustained rate of more than 195,000 per hour.  That works out to about 140 million page views per month.  No tuning... one web server, one database server...

Yes, Virginia... DotNetNuke does scale!

*grin*
