Hi Experts,

I have the following problem

I need to let the users login to DNN portal through their windows login(AD).but their roles in DNN is not synchonized with active directory.

I was able to have the auto login part by enabling windows authentication. but the users are not assigned their DNN role when accessing the portal.(these roles are in DNN database), because of this, users cannot access the pages which has been given permission based on the roles.

can you please help me to solve this?

A couple of things for you to check:

1.  Make sure you have the "Synchronize Role?" option checked on that portal.

2.  Make sure you have groups in Active Directory with the exact same name (pre-Windows 2000 name) as the DNN security roles, and that those users are in that AD group.

Hi Dan ,

Thanks for your reply.

I do not want to sync AD roles with DNN roles.(they are different). What I want to do is to validate the user from AD (auto login) and assign their DNN security role. So that they can view the pages restricted to those DNN secutiry roles.

for example when User ABC access the DNN portal, he should have an auto login (validated against AD) his AD user group is X but his DNN user group is Y. So when he access the portal he should be able to view the contents restricted to Y secutiry role in DNN. (basically at auto login he should be assigned his DNN security role).

Hope this helps for you to get a better picture of my problem.

The only way you're going to be able to automatically put people into DNN roles with the AD Provider is to sync them against the AD groups unless you extend the provider specifically for your situation.

Yep, in fact, that is the whole purpose of the provider role syncronization, to synchronize with AD security groups.  Otherwise, what roles are you going to synchronize with?

You can assign users to security roles within DNN manually, or you can create auto-assign security roles (but then everyone would get assigned to them).  There might be a third party program to do what you want, but my suggestion would be to create matching security groups within AD and populate them with the appropriate users (don't have to use them for anything else).  Then you'll get exactly the kind of role synchronization that you want.
