I've been working on a custom module for over a year.  I've got an instance running on a live website.  Meanwhile I've made continual changes to the code and database on my "development" machine.  Well, now things are working in order and I want to upgrade my module.  My question is this:  Is there a wonderful incantation of magic - or a tool - that many of you use when creating your various sql scripts?

I'm familiar with SSMS and Tasks - Generate Scripts - but I believe those only Create or Drop.  Is there a tool that'll compare and generate a script for me for specified tables?

I'm tooling with a trial of RedGate's SqlCompare - but that seems to create an overwhelming amount of code.

Is there a better and/or cheaper way to go?  WITHOUT writing it all out myself?!?!  Sql Alters and changing default values and such isn't my strong point.

Thanks for the tips!

theres a number of tools - redgate are usually regarded as the marketleader. The tool can generate sql scripts (plus rollback in case of failure), or the more advanced edition can even generate a .net exe to automate conversions. Other's i've used with degrees of success are http://www.apexsql.com/sql_tools_diff.asp and http://www.sqleffects.com/sqlAccordDetails.html (which is less fully featured, but is free)

Thanks for the tips - I'll have to kick the tires on the apexsql.  I like Redgate - it's perfect - I was just hoping there was a "pretty good" version of something out there that still generated the sql scripts.

I've been using SQLEffects for the last Month+ and really liked it, until I really started making a lot of modifications to my db's - it's great, just don't like all the work in getting 2 db's together.
