Anyone???

Sorry Dariel, yesterday was a holiday up here in Canada and I wasn't near my computer all day. What it's trying to do is add a line to the web.config for automatic logins in the <httpModules> section of your web.config. Why it's erroring out trying to do that is a mystery to me at this point as I've never had a problem with it and anyone that I've known of having problems was usually either permission related or the file was set to "Read-Only".  Unfortunately I think even if you add the necessary line to your web.config it'll still error on the installer when it tries to check if the line is needed.

EDIT: I had to go back and see what the error you were getting was again. Another possibility is that it's running into a problem when it tries to backup your web.config (in case of problems such as this). Does NETWORK SERVICE have modify permissions throughout your website (i.e you may have to force inheritance from the parent directory).

I went in and replaced all the permissions from the root down to give network service full control (I had Modify) and restarted IIS but the problem is still there, does it make a difference wether I install it it thru admin/extensions or host/module def? I tried it both ways same result, I also noticed that AD Auth proj does not show in the list of extensions so I guess it uninstalled half way. could I change the installer to not back up the config or modify it and then modify it myself?

The only thing that I am doing different from anyone else (I think) is that I install DNN at the root of the site (default Web Site) and not as a virtual directory and I had to modify my config as to not allow inheritance <location path="." inheritInChildApplications="false"> I don't see a reason for this to change anything... do you?

Also before I changed permissions I was not able to go in and try to edit the extension at all (I would get Object reference not set to an instance of an object error thingy) i now get to it and it shows the settings but it displays the following error towards the bottom and if I try to change anything:

Error: is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Authentication.ActiveDirectory.Settings.UpdateSettings() --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Installation and uninstallation should be done under the Host->Extensions menu I believe. If you want to bypass the web.config changes extract the .dnn file from the package your trying to install and open it in Notepad. Look for a section called <component type="Config> and remove that complete section (down to and including the </component> after </config>. That should remove the changes that are done to the web.config.

that was it!!!

it is now installed without errors and it works

it would be nice to know why it cannot play with the config though?
