I am not certain if this is an issue for other DNN users but it certainly is for me.  I would consider myself a mid-level programmer and designer.  I have been learning about DNN for 8 months now.  I am ready to launch my first major site in about a week.  Believe it or not I am still without a shopping cart.  You would think a quality and reasonably priced shopping cart would be simple to find consider the broad scope of DNN.

Well it's not!  I have searched and searched but to know avail.  It seems some of the main ones like AliCommerce get bad customer reviews.  All I really want is a simple way to sell a few shippable products, digital media, and most importantly varying subscriptions to my dnn application.  I am using Authorize.net as my payment gateway.  I contacted the expensive ASPDOTNETCOMMERCE people and they do not offer subscription products and registration.

I don't want to have to spend time programming.  It seems like this should be a module available out of the box.  Does anyone have suggestions?  Please help!

Dennis,

We've been using the excellent CATALooK shopping cart.

The Good: It's very inexpensive and quite feature-rich. I have found the developer to be responsive to my support requests.

The Bad: It's got so many features that there is a bit of a learning curve. Also, successive builds of DotNetNuke can break it, for reasons that escape me. So, be sure to avoid upgrading until the developer releases a build for that DNN release, which she does reasonably promptly after a new DNN build (usually a week or two). For example, at this writing there is a build for DNN 4.9.1, but not for DNN 5.0.

The Ugly: The documentation is, well, very thorough but not especially user-friendly.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Hello Steve,

I've been searching a decent shopping cart as well. What do you use for the payment gateway with CATALook?

Catalook is about as good as it gets. It is a bit difficult to work your way through getting it installed and configured however, it has a LOT of great features, including configurable products where you can bundle items based on consumer choices.

It really is jam packed with great features if you take the time to just learn how to get it set up and configured. Customizing it it the hardest aprt if you ask me but if you keep it simple you can surround it with a skin that makes it look good.

Yes, e-commerce has been an issue with DNN for a long time.  In my experience, however, there are actually some pretty good options.  I get to work with a large diverse customerbase everyday that are using DNN in a variety of ways.  The e-commerce modules I've seen my customers use most often are Catalook, AliCommerce, Active Purchase, and AspDotNetStorefront.

My personal preference is Catalook for the reasons comunicated above.  It is a somewhat bloated module in that it has a TON of features that were apparently added without useability in mind.  But once you get the hang of Catalook and figure out where everything is, it is a very powerful module.  The documentation is okay but Nina Meiers makes up for it with catalooksupport.com, a fantastic catalook resource.

I have also got some very positive feedback from customers on the ease and simplicity of Alicommerce for simple ecommerce needs.  I do not have experience with this product myself, but I do look forward to giving it a try.

AspDotNetStoreFront is just hitting stride after it had some problems with it's DNN integration.  I think their main problem was that they got out of step with the release cycle of DNN (DNN broke ASPDNSF and vice versa).  This seems to have been resolved and the latest version of DNN and the storefront seem to be working much better together.  This is a great product if your e-commerce needs are VERY advanced.  I have a significant amount of experience with this product and it has every feature under the sun.  The big complaint I have for them is on the features side of things: they really need google checkout support.

Anyway, I have done a lot with e-commerce over the past 2 years or so so I thought I'd give you my quick little run down.  Good luck!
