Hi,

First, I'm using DNN for quite some time, but limioted, just to make my own website, and didn't had too much time to play with it to much. Running it on Win Server 2003 (under VS2005 RC2 + SQL Server Express 2005)

I installed it around version 4.3 I think, set up my website, and added content from time to time - all went smooth

Also, when I had time I updated it, and I got up to version 4.7.x or something without any problems

Sometimes ago, when I tried to update to 4.8.1, I got an error during installation, but was pressed by time, didn't pay much attention. After that, I tried to access the website and it worked. So I left it that way. Since then it seemed to work, I was able to add new content to existing pages.

Yesterday I tried to add new page, but I realized I cannot access Pages menu neiother from admin mode, not from Host

So I tries to update to 5.0.0, which failed, that to 4.9.1, which seems to succeed

After that I was able to view the site, login,as admin and host, but I still cannot access any management page (in admin or host menu). Trying to access them give usual error when browser try to navigater to a missing page.

What can I do? How can I repair my DNN installation?

I could make a new dnn installation but I don't know how to install my existing portal onto it (since I cannot access any admin page, I cannot access portals page, whioch allow me to pack a portal data for transporting to another host)

Please help.

Thanks,

Bogdan

Hi Bogdan,

You got yourself into a bit of a mess. It all started with ignoring an upgrade/installation error. To those reading this: if anything copy paste the report to a text file so if you run into any troubles you can paste that text here for others to look at. Now it's presumably lost and you're left with a knot to untangle.

Some things you have to realize first that will help you untangle this:

  1. There are 2 key components to any install/upgrade: the files and SQL. The first is relatively easy to untangle, the second is more difficult. Note that this is communicated during an upgrade as 'DNN version', vs 'Database version'. A discrepency between the two signals DNN it should upgrade.
  2. DNN takes care of running scripts from old to new version. It takes the file names of the SqlDataProvider files for this. It will never run a file with a version nr less than or equal to current version.
  3. The version nrs are stored in SQL in a table called Version.
  4. Side note: normally no modules are installed during a DNN upgrade except a couple like Text/Html, Links, and some providers.

From point 2 you can deduce your attempt to 'upgrade' to 4.9.1 after 5.0.0 would probably not have much effect.

If you really want to save this installation and have no recent working backup you can go back to I'd start looking at the version table. Check where your current DB version is. You're going to have to make the database resemble that version and put the DNN files in place on disk. So:

  1. Find out DB version of your DNN installation
  2. Make a fresh install of that DNN version somewhere
  3. Compare the two databases using a tool like Red Gate
  4. Delete all DNN stuff from your installation. This means all except bin, DesktopModules, and portals (and web.config of course). Naturally you'll make a backup first.
  5. Copy in the DNN files of the DB version.
  6. Adjust web.config to your liking (connection string, machine keys, etc).

Then you might have a chance to recover this. If there are still issues examine the possible installed extras mentioned under 4 in the first list.

Good luck,

Peter

Hi Peter,

Thank you very much for your time to give such a detailed answer.

I checked the db version and it is 4.9.0

However DNN was 4.9.1 You told me to make an fresh installation of that version of dnn somewhere. But where could I find dnn 4.9.0, I see there is only 4.9.1

Maybe, if I install 4.9.1, make the difference script between my db and a fresh 4.9.1, then run the script to update my db to 4.9.1 and set that in Versions table, and copy dnn files over might work?

Thanks again

Bogdan
