I'm guessing you have used another CMS before and DNN works differently (correct me if I'm wrong).

You cannot (by default) inject a text in the skin and make that editable, DNN editing is module based. A pane is a space in your skin reserved to allow an admin to add a module to.
That module is then editable, so a pane is only like zone you can add modules to.

When you use the HTML module, it has the option for the content editor to inject an HTML template, which can then be edited.

Yes, this is my first web CMS. So glad to see that it's obvious! : )

You're right-- you don't make the pane editable, you add something editable (a new module) to the pane. Thanks!

(I was getting success from editing just Index.ascx and skin.css, so I thought I could do it all from there.)

I see that setting the attribute values in my pane DIV was just the first part. Then I go to Modules, Add Module..., and add a new module to my pane, and I can there set the desired pane because what I have in Index.ascx is what appears on the pulldown menu.

And then to style that pane, that's through the module container under Module Settings, Page Settings, not skin.css.

I don't see where the content editor can inject an HTML template. Is that from the Module Container? or something under the HTML Module Settings under Module, Settings?

Thanks again!

The HTML template can be injected from the editor.
(the one you see when you click edit text in an HTML module)
The default editor is RADeditor, AFIR it has a Template manager icon (but we use CKEditor, so I'm not 100% sure about RAD)
