Hello,

I wanted to ask how to upgrade to the newest version of DNN.. I tried to see the installating guide in DNN docs but I still didn't get, is it just "copy and paste" the upgrading files to my website ???

I'm in the same boat. I read the instructions from Mitchel Sellers blog (http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/articletype/articleview/articleid/243/upgrade-to-dnn-490-from-462-or-later.aspx). All due respect to Mr. Sellers; I’m learning a lot from researching his site. However, the upgrade instructions aren’t specific enough for a new guy like me:

“Once you have downloaded the package, simply unzip it over your existing DNN installation.”

What does that mean? Where is my existing DNN installation? I use 3Essentials to host my website. Do I access my existing DNN installation through my Plesk control panel, via an ftp upload, through a File Manager on my DNN web portal, or some other means I’m not even aware of yet?”

I would appreciate it if someone would direct me to more specific directions for someone who is using a web hosting company (3Essentials) to host the DNN web page.

Thank you. Negative Phil.

Hey mshair86,

The process for upgrading to DNN 5 is very much the same as previous versions (backup your file system and database, extract the upgrade package over the file system, ensure file system permissions are intact, and then hit the upgrade wizard). Make sure you do this in a test environment first, and make sure you back up!

I would also consider waiting for DNN 5.0.1 which *hopefully* will be released soon if you are upgrading a production site. There have been a number of issues identified (around 80 or so that will be fixed in 5.0.1) and you run the risk of having a bad upgrade experience with DNN 5.  If you are just upgrading a test site or playground site - go for it.

Take care,

Ian

Dear Ian,

Thank you very much for your reply, I will wait for the new version to be released.

But still, I didn't fully understand the upgrading process:

What are exactly the files that I should back up? and How?
Should I extract all the files of the upgrading package in the same folder that contains my DotNetNuke files? and what should I use to copy these files? FTP manager?
"Ensure file system permissions are intact" How can I do this ?
"Hit upgrade wizard" what and where is this ?

Thank you very much, Ian. I will be waiting for your reply :)

Hey mshair86,

Here is a little more detail - hope it helps.

Take care,

Ian

What are exactly the files that I should back up? and How?

You should back up your entire website directory (e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\MyWebsite). Also backup your full database. You can do this through SQL Server Management Studio or check with your web host.

Should I extract all the files of the upgrading package in the same folder that contains my DotNetNuke files? and what should I use to copy these files? FTP manager?

Yes, you'll want to copy the contents of the upgrade package straight over the root of the DotNetNuke folder (e.g. c:\inetpub\wwwroot\MyWebsite). FTP will work just fine.

"Ensure file system permissions are intact" How can I do this ?

You'll want to right click on the root folder, select "security" and give either the Network Service (Vista, Server 2003/2008) or ASP.NET Machine Account (XP) "modify" permissions. If you're doing this remotely you'll want to check with your hosting provider on how to apply these permissions. Tell them that whatever windows account that is set as the identity of your web site needs to have "Modify" permissions.

the "Hit upgrade wizard" what and where is this ?

This would be your website in a web browser - e.g. http://localhost/MyWebSite - this will launch the upgrade wizard the first time you hit the site.
