Sam thanks for you comments, and let me also say that help on these forums by you and and a couple of others really makes a difference because of time constraints and I simply don't know all the answers at times because if I go down a path, like I have done for some months on a few projects, I can't move forward and I've simply had to look for other ways of doing things. And yes, I notice these forums are a bit void other than a few core team members assisting, but since I don't code, I feel it's somewhere I can show some value. Fortunately I'm a fast typer, so I only need to slow my thinking down a bit and I can keep up with typing my thoughts!!
Excitingly enough I thought of another few new ideas I'd like to implement with skinning (Just when i thought they had all been answered) but not had the time. These forums have been taking up alot more of my time to handle than I thought and sometimes I have to go and explore some answers or ask for higher level assistance (eg.. different forums, different questions)
Now back to your question - you know that if you put in display: none in the icon css, it won't show even if your users put in an icon. Were you aware of that -it actually overrides it.
I think I went down this path as many do, becuase there might have been a class missing that stopped some perculiarities happening when you use the active classes and the icon. I remember spending about 4 days with as many options/changes, like I was on a rubiks cube (remember those) and in the end, I came to the conclusion it wasn't me.
Now that was in DNN2, but not sure if it was changed in DNN3 and it wasn't this particular class necessarily.
I assume you are working in ASCX mode? Have you checked the class resides in there as well?
