With dnn 9.4 I extracted the files in a folder.

I DID NOT add any special permission to the folder.

I create the site in IIS 5.1 and set the document and the asp.

I installed sql 2005 express and DID NOT add any database.

I DID NOT modifiy the web.config file at all.

I typed in ie 7 http://localhost/mywebsite and the instalaltion started regularly!!!

Using windwos xp sp3

I wonder if this is normal and if it is due to fact that it is a local installation.

Will it be different when I will install on a virtual server?

Thanks

enzo

if you didn't alter the connectionstrings then the default is to use sql express user instances (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb264564.aspx ). The majority of hosting providers do not support sql express (partly due to it's limitations [e.g. 1GB ram for queries], but also so they can charge you for SQL Server - note: they can also schedule backups etc. with a full sql server version)

I'd recommend that you add a blank database to SQL server and create a user with db_owner capability on that database and then do another install using those settings, this will get you used to do an install that is likely to be closer to a hosting experience.

this is, how it should be :)

however, you should validate correct permissions for the virtual ASP.Net Account and for a server installation you may use a database instead of database file to be able to open it using e.g. SQL Server management Studio. On Windows Server 2008, there are a few additional pitfalls regarding setup of the app pool and authentication.

Ok I did it!

I ordered a virtual server running 2003 x64.

I installed sql express 2005 and the management studio.

Did not add a database.

I created the dnn folder (using 5.0 now)

Created the website in IIS.

Set the document to be default.aspx as first document.

Given full permission to the folder for network services.

I am connected to the server via remote desktop, so I open IE 7 on the virtual server and I type http://localhost/mydomain in IE 7 but get this error message

HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found.
Internet Information Services (IIS)

and obviously the installation of dotnetnuke does not start.

I do not understand what I am doing wrong because this is exactly what I did on my PC and it did work.

Also I would like to know how I could use a real database (after having created one) i.e. how to tweak the web.config file to use a real database.

Any link I will pointed I will read it carefully.

Thanks

  • make sure, asp.Net 2.0 or above is installed on the server.
  • make sure, the web site is set to support ASP.Net 2.0 (there should be a tab in web site properties)
  • make sure, Network Service has full permission to install directory and all subdirectories
  • if you are on a server, you should install DNN in a web site root - no virtual directory required
  • on a web server, always call your site using external address (www.mydomain.com or whatever)
  • I always use regular databases. Create a blank database and grant owner permission to the user to be used by the web site ("Network Service", if you are using integrated Windows authentication). you do not need to tweek the web.config file manually, the DNN install wizard will present you with the necessary questions
