So I installed DotNetNuke 5.0, mostly for training, and I had a couple of issues. This posting details my issues and solutions.

Environment: Vista 64 SP1, SQL Server Express 2008, Visual Studio 2008, IBM Intellestation M PRO,

The Documentation is 3 years old, so you have to set up for V3.x and the do more mods for 4.x (and 5.x, etc).

"The Project Location is Not Trusted" dialog box showed up when I tried to open the project using Visual Studio 2008. To resolve (since I had not installed .net SDK) I had to intall mscorcfg.exe from this custom installer, and run it using the instructions in this MSDN article.

Part of that was having to set the root folder of the DotNetNuke as a machine share. I thought it kind of weird. However, later I move the project contents to other parts of my box, and didn't need to do this. Stopped using VS 2008 at this point.

You have to run VS 2008 as an admin whenever you open the project, to get around IIS security.

The docs say to set .net 2x. In the IIS 7 admin ui, you need to set this in the Application Pools node, way at the top.

Initial browsing to the site results in Server Error in Application "application name" HTTP Error 500.19 – Internal Server Error HRESULT: 0x800700b7: The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid.

The error was a duplicate add name="scriptmodule" in the Web.config. I took out the one within the <modules> section. Some people have had issues debugging the site with VS 2008 after doing this; I guess I'll find that out whether that's a problem another day.

IIS then complained about the connection string in the appSetting section. There was already one in the connectionstrings node, so I removed the one in the appSetting section.

I'm in DotNetNuke territory, now, and I have an error with DotNetNuke.UI.Utilities.MSAJAX.get_IsInstalled() . This turns out to be a reference to an outdated (1.0.61025.0) System.Web.Extensions.dll in the web.config, and an old dll in the website/bin folder. I changed the version number in the web.config to 3.5.0.0 (multiple places) and removed the dll from the bin folder.

Then the error "entry 'asp:System.Web.UI:System.Web.Extensions, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' has already been added.". I had to comment the add tagPrefix="asp" namespace="System.Web.UI" line in web.config. Newsgroup info says there may be issues trying to debug the site after doing this as well. We'll see.

So I finally got the Install screen to appear.

Things went well, though in skipping over the SMTP setting, I had an error. I haven't tackled any SMTP on my box, so I ignored it. The installer let me proceed anyway.

I went 'customized' install, and installed all available optional modules in every step.

While intalling providers, there was an error with BroadCastPollingCachingProvider. I deselected that option and continued.

The installer asks me to set up the Host Portal -- I was kind of confused by this, since I already created a HostAdmin which I at first thought was the administrator. Then I realized I was simply making the first portal in the system, and the previous was (just like it says) the host or server admin.

When I tried to log in, I got an odd critical error Method not found: 'System.Collections.Hashtable DotNetNuke.Services.Authentication.AuthenticationConfigBase.get_ModuleSettings()'. Here was the fix.

Everything seems to be working at this point. Really all I have to do is set up SMTP, learn how to use the portal, and make sure I can debug.

thanks, antorcol
